Best Dressed: Grammy Awards 2012

If you regularly follow up with my blog, you know that I'm typically biased when it comes to Lady Gaga—well, she's not on the list this time. I was not so fond of Versace's designs (cough: I'm looking at you, Nicki Minaj!).

What I was fond of was all the sparkly numbers. Let's start with the night's biggest winner (of ALL 6 nominations!): Adele kept it classic in a glimmering black Armani gown with three-quarter sleeves, Louboutin heels, and Harry Winston diamonds. Her beauty look: blonde bombshell, long lashes, + bold crimson lips.

Katy Perry was blue from head-to-toe in a sparkly and glimmering powder blue Elie Saab gown. I wasn't so sure about the hair, but I suppose the look wouldn't be her own without it.

Taylor Swift donned a golden + gorgeous floor length Zuhair Murad gown, with a mandarin collar and a sweeping train. Her smokey and subtle stained lip completed the glamorous + dramatic look.

Kelly Rowland looked stunning in a blush Alberta Ferretti dress embellished with silver flower beading and soft draping. Lorraine Schwartz chandelier earrings also played up the embellishments on the dress.

Last but not least, Alicia Keys in her sleek and minimal Alexandre Vauthier black dress with rounded shoulder pads and metal plate. This is the first time I've come across this new French designer. j'adore. Also, her black pointy ankle strap heels look terribly painful, but it definitely pulled the bold dress together.

GTL. Ah, the infamous acronym a la Jersey Shore. Well, unlike the show, this editorial (Vogue US, 2005) is all things classy—and, one of my favorites for that matter. I love the juxtaposition of high fashion + glamour with a mundane and not-so-glamorous task like doing laundry. Enough to make me excited to do a load of laundry? nay. But it certainly makes me inspired to dress up, go for a bold red lip, AND have some fries.

What have we got here...a few snaps from Paris Haute Couture street style: chic model-off-duty looks, to luxe outfits. I have an affinity for black on black outfits, and Arizona Muse and Anja Rubik nailed it with their leather pants and black blazer + jacket, tailored to perfection. Karlie Kloss and Olivia Palermo also spotlight leather pieces paired with a Chanel bag (on Kloss) and Louboutins (Olivia). I couldn't leave out Claire Courtin-Clarins' textured look: Christophe Josse dress, Gucci fur, Louis Vuitton bag, and D&G shoes. yum. As for Anna Dello Russo, she adds fun to her style, as per usual, wearing a Givenchy outfit and some quirky glasses. Speaking of quirky, polka dot tights add a cool element to an otherwise neutral playsuit, yes?

Audrey Hepburn refers to it as the best place on earth, where nothing bad can take place (Breakfast at Tiffany's). Marilyn Monroe sings about it (Diamonds are a Girl's Bestfriend). Eartha Kitt also sings about it with specific Christmas decoration requests (Santa, Baby). For years, Tiffany's & Co. has been closely associated with providing (pricey, but exquisite) symbols of love for couples. Hold on, hold on—before you assume that I'm about to gush over some diamond ring or a 'must-have' product, let me finish, yo. Since February is right around the corner (ahem, that means Valentines Day. blergh) I thought I'd be nice and share this piece of information with you romantics and/or friends who share some sort of beneficial relationship with a friend(s). If Facebook wasn't enough to showcase your sappy tendencies (yes, I went there) you can now upload your own photos to the gallery, using a special filter app on iTunes. Charm Her: Style Tips

The latest entry of Charm Her (the men's installment to this blog) was inspired by one of my favorite street style photographers, Tommy Ton. I came up with a few pointers thanks to his latest action-packed snaps.

Style Tips:

- DO wear knit or printed scarves to liven up your suits + blazers (Calling all straight men: this is a green light to amp up your style—bold is not bad in this case. Girls are suckers for cute polka dots, swear!) However, if you tend to shy away from prints—and are not open to change: opt for a neutral scarf tucked under your blazer.

Hey Kanye: what's that jacket, Margiela?

- Layer outwears + parka/utilitarian coats over suits for extra chilly days— that is, unless you live in L.A.

- Give your suit a luxe finish by adding gloves—although this may work best if you're already style-conscious. gloves = red light if you currently have no idea about dressing.

- Knitted beanies are great toppers to keep warm and hide a bad hair day (you didn't think we noticed those, aye?)

- Cigarettes are not-so-stylish outside a a photograph. Skip it.

- File under Things to remember when out with your significant other: your (stylish) girl/guy is the focal point to your outfit, and you are their best accessory. Hold hands and charm each other :)

These are a few of my favorite looks from the Oscar de la Renta, Pre-Fall 2012 collection. I tend to view Oscar as "Charlie" and the slew of ladies clad in his glamorous designs as his "angels." Well, these Angels are in for a treat this season, as per usual. OdlR never fails to dazzle with his signature evening looks—especially his swooshy full skirts and decadent prints + bright colors. Also, the Daisy Buchanan looks (photos 1, 2) makes me even more excited for the upcoming The Great Gatsby film.

Let me rekindle everyone's obsession that is Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011). I know, I know, the timing of this post could not be more imperfect, but: I had to have these stills in my blog archives.

Remember the epic makeover scene when Ryan's character—the ultimate playboy & romancer—transforms a clueless divorcee to a more suave bachelor? Well, the makeover was more than just elevating Steve Carrel's style with a great suit—it was about getting him to snap out of his marriage woes, and most importantly, feel comfortable and current with himself. However, it was Ryan Gosling's array of wardrobe changes (and charm + smirk + good looks) throughout the film that made the rom-com oh-so memorable. Last night, Lady Gaga donned a custom Chanel white tweed + black trim ball gown, with pearls & bows— impeccably designed by Karl Lagerfeld. The occasion was none other than the much anticipated opening of Gaga's Workshop at Barney's New York, where Mother Monster got to play Mother Christmas. Making quite the extravagant entrance as per usual, she resembled a giant snow angel—dressed in couture, of course—slash glitzy tree-topper. The workshop set-up appeared to be inspired by Wonka's Chocolate Factory (hello: chocolate Alexander McQueen shoes, monster-shaped cookies) and The Nightmare Before Christmas qualities (evident in the cartoon-like decor + sculptures)—but with an extra "Gaga" touch. Well, it's about time, gents ! After years of blogging and swooning over all the stylish women, editorials, collections, & products the fashion world has to offer, I have finally decided to include a "Charm Her" installment to my blog. This will be a weekly entry on menswear/men's style, because guys have feelings too, you know? Okay, but on a serious note—what prompted my decision to explore the sartorial platform of the opposite gender? Well, let me tell you: Interning at Who What Wear has given me an eye to observe men's style in L.A.

Whether it's on Wilshire, Melrose or Crescent Heights, I have grown way too fond of seeing stylish men walking their dogs or running errands. And, sometimes the first thing that comes in mind is, "wait. is he straight?"
Also, too often have I seen guys who just need a little push in the style department, which could essentially make a big difference in their presentation. A sample of men's style Q's in my inbox is also proof to start Charm Her. My final reason? because Mark Twain once said: "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society". And there you have it, folks.

Brace yourselves, gents, as I'll be honest and may or may not include real life oh-no-he-didn't style scenarios I have come across. Also, if you think the reference is about you...it probably is [insert the Grinch grin].

When you wear a "little black blazer" this weekend, you just may be *that* much closer to emulating
Le Gosling.

FYI: Notice how I left off Burberry's, Tom Ford's, + super pricey designers. My goal is to be realistic with price ranges, so here are a few more options:

I wore a black BCBG dress, sported some ears + tail + bow, and—voila!—transformed into a black cat (or witty kitty) for the weekend. So what is Man-Repelling? Well, it's simple, really: "outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls, shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs," Leandra explains (business insider).
Leandra has coined "arm-party," as decorating one's wrists with an array of statement bracelets, stacked on top of each other. Personalizing these accessories with a "more is more" philosophy—along with her innovative approach to style—is essentially about unleashing the inner-you, rather than repelling (straight) men, as she often notes. While she has a slew of press, a reference she made in Harper's Bazaar captures the assortment of ensembles, that well, aren't exactly alpha male-appealing: "I am the definition of my blog's name: the Man Repeller. To a fashion fan, I look stylish. To the average straight man, however, I'm not a bird, so why the feathers? I'm not a schoolboy, so why the ill-fitting trousers? And I am certainly not a Sikh ... so why the turban? Essentially, I'm wearing the sartorial equivalent of birth control"

Oh, and here's another good one:

"Being a man repeller becomes a process of elimination. If a guy is only really into your outfit and won't date you because of what you're wearing, they are too driven by the female exterior and don't care about your intellect."

I say, we cheer on the Leandra's, Alexa Chung's & Olsen's of fashion (vs. the Kim Kardashian's) and partake in our own 'arm party' this Halloween, yes? Yes.

super-duper nerd in L.A. (Me!) vs. supermodel, Miranda Kerr in NYC

And... the Us Weekly pick for "Who Wore it Best" goes to Miranda Kerr. None the less, The Social Shopper: City Sleek post on Vogue still made me smile. Why? because the minimal and timeless look I donned for a festive outing last night emulated Miranda Kerr's look.

I can't give myself much credit, because these are all basic staples in every wardrobe—white or off-white button-down blouse, faux leather pants, & black stiletto heels—but the timing to spot the Vogue Guide post was cool.
